2. Types of Accounts Available

This section covers setting up and funding taxable accounts or traditional and Roth IRAs on Composer for personal investing. Business accounts are also available for trading entities. Book a call here, and we’ll help you get onboarded.

Taxable Accounts

Composer’s taxable trading accounts are primarily held by Alpaca Securities LLC (Alpaca), while most IRA accounts are held by Apex Clearing Corporation (Apex). Your taxable portfolio may be held at either broker, though Alpaca is more common.

Both Alpaca and Apex are licensed, insured, and fully compliant with U.S. trading regulations. They provide brokerage services for many fintech platforms and are members of FINRA and SIPC, providing account protection up to $500,000, which includes a $250,000 limit for cash.

Alpaca vs. Apex: Key Differences

  • Minimum order size: $1 for Alpaca, $5 for Apex.
  • Recommended investment per symphony: $100+ on Alpaca, $500+ on Apex.
  • Crypto support: Only Alpaca supports crypto trading on Composer.

You can deposit and withdraw funds anytime, but taxable accounts are subject to standard tax implications on gains and withdrawals, just like any other brokerage.

Business Accounts

For trading entities, business accounts are also available. Whether you run a fund, LLC, trust, or are a prop trader looking to establish your own entity, book a call here to get your free consultation and gain access to Composer Business Accounts.

Retirement Accounts (IRAs)

Composer offers traditional and Roth IRAs, all carried by Apex. These accounts follow standard IRA rules:

  • Contribution limit: $7,000 if you’re under 50 / $8,000 if you’re age 50 or older per year (subject to IRS rules).
  • Early withdrawal penalty: Applies before age 59½.

You can also transfer or roll over an existing IRA, 401(k), or 403(b) into your Composer IRA.

How to Transfer an IRA

  1. Go to Accounts & Funding from your profile menu.
  2. Click the down arrow next to your Roth IRA.
  3. Select “Transfer from another brokerage.”
  4. Choose your brokerage or select “My brokerage isn’t listed” to manually enter details.
  5. If needed, find your Participant ID or contact help@composer.trade for assistance.

We use Beagle to assist with rollovers, and step-by-step instructions are available when setting up your Composer IRA.
